MIAMI -- Another promising Minor League pitcher has been promoted from Triple-A New Orleans.
Nick Wittgren, rated by MLBPipeline.com as the Marlins' No. 21 prospect, was recalled before Tuesday's 7-0 loss to the Nationals. Wittgren is filling the roster spot of Edwin Jackson, who has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right triceps strain. Jackson's stint is retroactive to Monday.
Wittgren made his Major League debut under difficult circumstances, facing Anthony Rendon with two outs and two on in the seventh inning. The right-hander walked him, and he was replaced by lefty Chris Narveson, who surrendered the game-clinching grand slam.

Manager Don Mattingly said Jackson has periodically been dealing with discomfort. The right-hander last pitched on Sunday, giving up a run in the 10th inning and suffering the loss in a 6-5 setback to the Braves at Marlins Park.
"Yesterday, he was tender," Mattingly said. "Talking to him today, it's been something that has been going on back-and-forth. It was just really the timing of him today. We couldn't afford to go without [depth]."
Wittgren, in the big leagues for the first time, had a 3.38 ERA in four Minor League outings. A ninth-round pick by Miami in the 2012 Draft, Wittgren attended college at Purdue.
In his Minor League career, Wittgren has worked in the back end of the bullpen, logging 80 saves in 93 chances. He had one save this season with New Orleans.
"He's a guy who throws strikes," Mattingly said. "He does all parts of the game pretty good. He holds runners. He's a guy that is probably not lighting up the radar, but he's had success all the way through."
In the past three days, the Marlins have called up two relievers from New Orleans. Kyle Barraclough was brought in on Sunday, taking over for Dustin McGowan, who was designated for assignment.
Jackson provided more of a long-relief option.
Wittgren, like many of the relievers in New Orleans, is being groomed to pitch multiple innings. But right now, the one true long reliever is Narveson.
Mattingly noted Wittgren, Barraclough, Bryan Morris and lefty Craig Breslow all can throw more than one inning.
David Phelps also could do it, but the preference is to use him one inning. For now, he has secured the eighth-inning setup spot.
"We've still got a group of guys we feel are not just one inning guys, and that's it," Mattingly said.
