Andrus nominated for Gold Glove Award

Rangers' defensive whiz led all MLB shortstops in range factor in 2017

ARLINGTON -- Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus has been nominated for his first Gold Glove Award, it was announced Thursday.

Andrus is one of three finalists for the American League winner for defensive excellence at shortstop, along with Francisco Lindor of the Indians and Andrelton Simmons of the Angels.

Andrus is one of three finalists for the American League winner for defensive excellence at shortstop, along with Francisco Lindor of the Indians and Andrelton Simmons of the Angels.

Andrus led all Major League shortstops with a range factor of 4.70 chances per nine innings. He also led the American League in assists and putouts, and was second in double plays.

According to Stats, Inc., Simmons had an .828 zone rating, the highest in the American League, while Lindor and Andrus were second at .825. Simmons also led the American League in defensive runs saved.

Jose Iglesias of the Tigers had the highest fielding percentage of all American League shortstops at .987. Lindor was second, Simmons was fourth and Andrus was seventh.

Lindor won the award last season for the first time in his career. Simmons has won the award in 2013 and '14 while with the Braves.

This year's Gold Glove Awards represent just one way the game's top performers will be recognized. Voting is underway now for the Esurance MLB Awards, which annually honor MLB's greatest achievements as part of an industry-wide balloting process. MLB Awards season will culminate on Friday, Nov. 17, when winners are announced live on MLB Network and MLB.com starting at 8 p.m. ET.

The last Rangers shortstop to win a Gold Glove was Michael Young in 2008. The only other was Alex Rodriguez, in 2002-03.

The Gold Glove Awards are presented by Rawlings, and the winners will be unveiled on Nov. 7 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on ESPN.
