Fantasy chat: Spring Training decisions

March 22nd, 2016

MLB.com fantasy guru Fred Zinkie fielded questions from fans during a live Twitter chat at @Fantasy411 on Tuesday. Check out the chat transcript below and check out the @Fantasy411 Twitter handle and MLB.com's fantasy home. Questions and answers have been edited for clarity.
@CharlieJr39: Should I draft A.J. Reed or Trea Turner in the last round of my draft?
Fred Zinkie: Take Reed, as he has should be in the Majors by May.
Don't start your draft without MLB.com's fantasy cheat sheet

@bigdaddyrenfro: Is Robinson Cano going to have a big year?
Zinkie: Cano was terrific in the second half of '15 and I expect him to be very productive this year. He could hit .300 with 20 homers and 85-90 RBIs.
@S3A1_10: Is Maikel Franco a top-10 third baseman?
Zinkie: Many people rank him as a top-10 third baseman, but I do not. His supporting cast makes me worry about his RBI and runs totals.
@TheDocaquatic: Would you rather have Alex Rodriguez or Mark Trumbo?
Zinkie: I would rather have Trumbo. Rodriguez tailed off down the stretch last season, and his age is a concern.

@bt6799: Which Blue Jays pitcher will have more saves this year, Roberto Osuna or Drew Storen?
Zinkie: Storen. Both relievers would be a second-tier closer if in possession of a ninth-inning gig.
@saveferris1007: What is your opinion on punting saves in a 5x5 roto league?
Zinkie: You can take that route. But think long and hard about it. It puts great pressure on you to fare well in the other categories.
@wfromans: I can have one of these pitchers for one dollar as my last starter: Joe Ross, Juan Nicasio, Adam Conley. Who should I pick?
Zinkie: Ross should be much better than the other two options.
@DN1CE23: Please rank these outfielders in a 5x5 roto league: Justin Upton, Adam Jones, Carlos Gonzalez, Carlos Gomez, Jason Heyward.
Zinkie: Upton, Jones, Gomez, Heyward, Gonzalez.
@JSmithTigre: Is it wise to draft Corey Seager in the third round of a 10-team keeper league?
Zinkie: It is a little aggressive, but you may need to go that early if you really want him.

@willyd09: I need a shortstop for the initial weeks of the season. Should I pick up Trevor Story, Didi Gregorius or Eugenio Suarez?
Zinkie: Pick up Story, who could be a five-category asset with hitter-friendly Coors Field by his side.
@inlowtops: Please name a good sleeper for first base.
Zinkie: A good plan is to start with a veteran such as Lucas Duda or Mark Teixeira and stash A.J. Reed for the summer months.
@BThomas62: Should I draft Andrew McCutchen or Giancarlo Stanton in Round 1?
Zinkie: Because of his immense power potential, Stanton has to be the choice.
@spaluch03: Which of these rookies is more likely to contribute this season: Jameson Taillon, Trea Turner, J.P. Crawford or Joey Gallo?
Zinkie: I expect Turner to make the largest impact of that group, followed by Crawford.
@LGonzo1026: Is Juan Nicasio worth a late-round pick?
Zinkie: He can be selected in 15-team leagues. But he should stay on waivers in 12-team formats.
@80_JRod: Are you worried about Wade Davis, who has experienced a drop in velocity this spring?
Zinkie: I am not worried. I expect him to be the top fantasy closer this season.

@TSNCamRoy: Do you think Corey Seager's knee injury hurts his value this year?
Zinkie: No, I do not. He is expected to be ready for Opening Day.
‏@isaac_tunes: Who do you expect to have a better season: Kenta Maeda or Joe Ross?
Zinkie: I feel good about Ross. He seems to be underrated as a potential breakout player.
@S3A1_10: Is it reasonable to expect a year similar to '15 from Edwin Encarnacion? Is he worth a second round pick?
Zinkie: Yes, he should be able to approach last year's numbers. He is a good option in the second half of Round 2.
@bt6799: What are your thoughts on Sonny Gray's recent struggles?
Zinkie: I'm not dropping his draft ranking at this point. He is going through something that happens to many starters.
@CowboysCEO86: Will Rougned Odor be a top-5 second baseman this season?
Zinkie: It is possible. I expect him to land right about the 5-mark.
@MorganPJames: Who do you expect to be the top three players in '16 for stolen bases at the end of the season?
Zinkie: Dee Gordon, Billy Hamilton, Charlie Blackmon.

@TommyCola92: How do you feel about Andrew Heaney this year?
Zinkie: His strikeout rate limits his upside. He can be used in 15-team mixed leagues or deeper.
@RileyRONN: Would you rather have Troy Tulowitzki or Francisco Lindor at shortstop?
Zinkie: Lindor for me, because of his ability to help in all categories.
@rutpharmknights: What do you project for Pablo Sandoval this season?
Zinkie: I do not expect him to make an impact in mixed leagues.
