PHOENIX -- Even with their top two hitters on the bench, the D-backs had no trouble swinging the bats on Sunday. They used a four-run first inning to take an early lead and Yasmany Tomás padded it with a pinch-hit, three-run homer in an 11-2 win over the Reds in the series finale at Chase Field.
"He wasn't happy about not being in the lineup," D-backs manager Chip Hale said of Tomas. "He actually talked to me, spoke very good English, and said he was ready and his back felt fine, why wasn't he in the lineup? So I explained I wanted Michael Bourn in right today, be ready to come off the bench and do something."
Jean Segura was out due to illness and Paul Goldschmidt took a scheduled rest day. In their absence, Welington Castillo drove in four runs to cap Arizona's series victory and finish a seven-game homestand with a 4-3 mark. Tomas' three-run blast in the sixth was his team-high 27th home run, as the D-backs matched a season high with 18 hits. Starter Archie Bradley (5-8) notched the win, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings.

Cincinnati starter Homer Bailey (2-3) was removed after one inning, during which he gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits to take the loss. Brandon Phillips and Scott Schebler homered, but the Reds lost for the fifth time in seven games. This rout came one day after the Reds socked it to Arizona with a 13-0 win.
"It was punch and counterpunch, they counterpunched big-time," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We realized early that Homer didn't have it and so it's four in the first and you try to dig yourself out of a hole and we hit a couple of homers to make it 4-2 and then we weren't able to find the right recipe."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Pollock shakes off the rust: D-backs center fielder A.J. Pollock was a combined 0-for-8 on Friday and Saturday, his first two games of the season after recovering from a fractured right elbow. On Sunday, the former All-Star was back to normal. He went 3-for-5 with a pair of stolen bases. Pollock singled to load the bases in the first, his first hit of the year, then singled again in the third. He stole both second and third before coming in to score on Welington Castillo's sacrifice fly. Pollock singled and scored again in the eighth.
"It's nice to get that first [hit]," Pollock said. "I'm pretty in tune with my eyes and how to track stuff and you can't really simulate a huge stadium like this and all the stuff in the background. Eventually it becomes just you looking at the batter's eye." More >>

Back-to-back jacks: In the top of the second inning, the Reds notched back-to-back home runs for the fifth time this season when Phillips and Schebler went deep. For Phillips, it was his ninth homer of the season, his first since he hit two on Aug. 6, and his third of the second half. He drove a 2-0 Bradley pitch to left field. Schebler, who hit two homers with five RBIs on Saturday, followed by taking an 0-1 pitch to the opposite field for his seventh homer of the season.

Bradley bounces back: Bradley was having a rough month before this start, entering the day 0-2 with an 8.22 ERA in five previous outings in August. This time, the right-hander produced his first start of at least six innings this month and notched his first win since July 27.
"All the work we've been putting in, some of the results haven't been there, but we're making progress," Bradley said. "I think today was a step forward and I just want to build off that and finish the season strong."
Biceps tenderness for Bailey: Displaying flat velocity and not much command, Bailey was removed because he was dealing with right biceps tenderness. Both Bailey and Price said that his surgically-repaired right elbow was feeling good. More >>
"On the bright side, I guess, if there is a silver lining, that would probably be it," Bailey said.
SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS
The D-backs stole four bases to push their total this month to 38. They continue to stretch the franchise record for steals in a month as the old record was 30 (May 1999). Arizona has the most stolen bases in the Majors since August 7.
Tomas is the first player to hit 10 home runs at home in a single month since Troy Tulowitzki hit 10 for the Rockies in Sept. 2010.
UPON FURTHER REVIEW
D-backs manager Chip Hale won a challenge in the bottom of the first, when Jake Lamb was called out at home plate trying to score from second on a two-out single to center by Brandon Drury. After review, the call was overturned as Reds catcher Ramón Cabrera lost the ball when he was tagging Lamb and was charged with an error. The run gave Arizona an early 4-0 lead.
The D-backs won another challenge in the bottom of the sixth when Billy Hamilton was called safe on a steal attempt at second base. After review, Hamilton was ruled out as he popped up off the bag while the tag was still applied by Drury, recording the first out of the inning.

WHAT'S NEXT
Reds:Dan Straily will try to extend his superb streak of starts in the second half when the Reds open a three-game series vs. the Angels at 10:05 p.m. ET Monday. Straily is 6-0 with a 1.98 ERA in his eight starts since the All-Star break while Cincinnati has won all eight games. It will be the club's first visit to Angel Stadium of Anaheim since 2002.
D-backs: After a day off on Monday, the D-backs travel to San Francisco for a two-game set that begins Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. MST. Zack Greinke (11-4, 4.29) takes the mound looking to improve his 7.84 ERA in August. He owns a 2.41 ERA in 12 career starts against the Giants.
