SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- As they continue to await a resolution to the Bryce Harper sweepstakes, the Giants augmented their outfield depth by signing veteran Gerardo Parra to a Minor League deal Tuesday, sources confirmed to MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi and Mark Feinsand.

Parra is a familiar face for the Giants, as he spent the last three seasons with the Rockies, batting .284 with a .714 OPS, six home runs, 53 RBIs and 11 stolen bases in 2018. The 31-year-old left-handed hitter has a career .278 batting average and .730 OPS over his 10-year career in the Majors.

Parra will enter camp as the Giants' most experienced outfielder, putting him in a strong position to compete for a starting job at one of the corner spots. Steven Duggar is expected to start in center field, but Parra will battle Mac Williamson, Austin Slater, Chris Shaw and Drew Ferguson for the vacancies in right and left field.

President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has said he would like to add multiple outfielders, so Parra's signing shouldn't preclude the Giants from continuing their pursuit of Harper.

"I think [Harper] would be a huge addition for us," ace Madison Bumgarner said Tuesday. "He's obviously a superstar in the game, a young player. I think everybody in here would be pretty damn excited to have him."

Worth noting

The Giants claimed right-hander Jose Lopez off waivers from the Reds on Tuesday, giving them another young rotation option to evaluate this spring. Lopez, 25, logged a 4.47 ERA over 141 innings for Triple-A Louisville last season. A sixth-round Draft pick of the Reds in 2014, Lopez has posted a 3.63 ERA in 94 career appearances in the Minors.

To clear a spot for Lopez on the 40-man roster, the Giants designated left-handed reliever Josh Osich for assignment.
