MIAMI -- Giancarlo Stanton won't be in the starting lineup Wednesday afternoon when the Marlins play the rubber game of a three-game series with San Francisco at Marlins Park.
It won't be because of a sore hip that took him out of Tuesday's game in the late innings. It was already a planned day off for the Marlins slugger, whose broken-bat RBI double in the first inning, which nearly cleared the left-field fence for a home run, produced the first run in the Marlins' 2-0 win Tuesday.
Stanton was replaced late in the game with soreness in his hip. The injury occurred the night before when he jammed his knee and hip while making a sliding catch in the Marlins' 8-7, 14-inning loss.
"I think he's all right," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said after Tuesday's game. "He had some soreness today before the game. We knew we were going to give him tomorrow [off]. He jammed his leg pretty good on that catch. He was sore today but felt like he could play."
Stanton went 1-for-2 with a walk before being lifted late. He drove in a run for the fifth straight game -- seven total in that span. The RBI was his 67th of the season, tying Christian Yelich for the team lead.
