SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants first baseman Brandon Belt felt sick to his stomach Wednesday and was scratched from the team's lineup for the Interleague series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays.
He recovered enough to enter the game in the ninth inning as part of a double-switch, and he scored the game-winning run on Buster Posey's walk-off, bases-loaded walk in the 13th for a 5-4 victory.
"He got better as the game went," said manager Bruce Bochy. "He got some treatment and said he was good to go."
Belt is one of two Giants -- third baseman Matt Duffy was the other -- to appear in each of San Francisco's previous 35 games this year. Belt started 33 of them. He has remained among the Giants' more consistent performers offensively, entering Wednesday having reached base safely through a hit or a walk in his last 18 games and batting .400 (12-for-30) in his last nine games. Belt also began Wednesday with a .448 on-base percentage, third-highest in the Majors.
Conor Gillaspie, typically a third baseman, replaced Belt at first base in the starting lineup. Before Wednesday, he had appeared in 15 Major League games at first base, starting there twice with the Chicago White Sox in 2013.
