Posey leads offense as Giants top Rockies

June 27th, 2017

SAN FRANCISCO -- A day after manager Bruce Bochy declared "enough is enough" to a few of the team's veteran players, the Giants put together a well-rounded game behind starter Jeff Samardzija for a 9-2 win over the Rockies on Monday night. The win snapped San Francisco's five-game losing streak and gave Colorado its sixth straight loss.
Samardzija -- who entered Monday with four losses in his last five decisions -- went 6 1/3 innings, struck out five, allowed two runs and improved to 3-9. He benefited from 's three-RBI game and 's 2-for-4 effort at the plate.
"There's a lot of talent in this offense," Bochy said. "There's no reason we can't get consistent putting runs on the board. ... Tonight I thought the at-bats and focus were so much better. Once we started getting rolling, the guys felt so much better about themselves."
• Span, Panik becoming strong 1-2 punch

The loss snapped Colorado's nine-game winning streak against the Giants, which was the longest in franchise history. Colorado's (5-4) went four innings and allowed five runs. continued his recent success at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance.
"With German," Rockies manager Bud Black said, "he has the velocity, he has the intent, he has the will and the conviction to get it done, but the fastball command tonight was lacking."
The Rockies are now riding a six-game losing streak, their longest of the year. Colorado has also dropped seven of its last eight road games after beginning the year 24-9 away from home.
"Just seems like things are going bad right now, but we'll turn it around," Rockies outfielder said.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Belt goes to Triples Alley: extended his hitting streak to nine games when he tripled to drive in Joe Panik, extending the Giants' lead to 3-0 in the third inning. Belt's triple, his third of the year, capped a two-run third inning that also saw Span score.

Strickland escapes:, in his second outing since serving a six-game suspension for an altercation with Washington's , shut down the Rockies' strongest rally in the seventh. After Reynolds scored to make it 5-1, Strickland checked in with runners on first and third. Though he allowed a Tony Wolters RBI single and a Charlie Blackmon walk, he kept the Rockies at bay and the Giants' lead intact.
"He kind of dusted off the cobwebs, I think, and he was able to come in here and pitch well tonight," shortstop said.

QUOTABLE
"We got a lot of pride in this clubhouse and a lot of guys that want to win ballgames regardless of the situation. Every day is important. We have to come out here and have some fun." -- Samardzija, on Bochy's "enough is enough" message

"This is a team game. It's not pitching, it's not hitting. It's all of it. Pitching's a lot easier when you have run support, and hitting's a lot easier when you have the pitchers shutting them down, having quick innings. It goes hand in hand. We just have to tighten it up as a team, everybody." -- Desmond, on the Rockies' six-game losing streak

Rockies third baseman sure enjoys visits to San Francisco. But Monday was a different story. The Giants held Arenado hitless (0-for-4) for the just eighth time in 37 games at AT&T Park. Monday was also the fifth time he hasn't reached base safely.
"I just really didn't give him anything to power," Samardzija said. "I stayed away from him mostly and he chased the slider up. He's a great hitter. It's a fun lineup to face because you're on your toes the whole time."
