Frustrated Holland moving to bullpen

SAN FRANCISCO -- Hours after being informed that he would be moved to the bullpen, Giants left-hander Derek Holland expressed frustration with the decision-making of the club’s front office, including a stint on the injured list that he felt wasn’t warranted.

“To be honest, I have no idea what they’re doing,” Holland said Saturday following the Giants’ 5-4 loss to the Reds at Oracle Park. “And I don’t mean [manager Bruce Bochy] and them, it’s more the front office. We keep changing a lot of things.”

Holland was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left index finger bone bruise last month, an ailment the Giants said he sustained while bunting during Spring Training. He missed only one start before returning to pitch against the Rockies on Thursday, though he subsequently gave up seven runs over 2 2/3 innings. The poor outing caused Holland’s ERA to spike to 6.75 on the season.

Bochy said Holland will be available to pitch out of the bullpen against the Reds on Sunday if needed. Holland made six relief appearances for the Giants last season and posted a 1.86 ERA over 9 2/3 innings. President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has said Holland’s ability to serve as a swing man factored into the Giants’ decision to re-sign the 32-year-old veteran to a one-year, $7 million deal over the offseason.

“Sometimes you break it up,” Bochy said. “You try to get him back on track, too. He gives you a legit long guy, another left-hander there. He has experience. He showed how well he can handle that. He’s resilient. We just feel at this point we’re better off having helping out of the bullpen.”

Despite his misgivings about the decision, Holland accepted the move to the relief role and reiterated his desire to continue to contribute to the club.

“If it’s going to help the team, that’s what it’s all about,” Holland said. “I care about these guys, and I want them to succeed. I want to be a part of that. Whatever I get called up to do, I’m going to do it.”

Tyler Beede is expected to pitch Tuesday against the Blue Jays, but the Giants have not yet named a starter for Wednesday. Triple-A arms Andrew Suarez and Shaun Anderson are potential options, though the Giants could also try an opener as a response to their well-documented woes in the first inning.
