SAN FRANCISCO -- Major League Baseball released a statement Friday acknowledging a mistake on Brandon Crawford's apparent ninth-inning home run Thursday.
The statement, which satisfied manager Bruce Bochy, said the instant replay ruling was incorrect.
"The call on the ball hit by Brandon Crawford of the Giants was overturned via Replay from a home run on the field to fan interference, with the batter-runner placed on second base," the statement read. "The call should have been confirmed as a home run for Crawford. MLB regrets the error."
Bochy said while it's unfortunate for Crawford, who was awarded a ground-rule double, the statement showed acknowledgement and responsibility.
"They were just being honest that they made a mistake," Bochy said. "It happens. We all make mistakes. I think the best thing to do is be honest about it. And they were."
Crawford eventually got his home run, as he hit a two-run homer in the second inning on Friday against the Cardinals.
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny called the declaration, "the right thing to do."
"In any walk of life, you make a mistake, admit it and try to improve from it and keep it from happening again," Matheny said. "I think they handled it as you would want it to be handled."
Crawford wasn't available to reporters before Friday's game.
"What makes it worse is when they [don't] stand behind that mistake," Bochy said. "... They owned up to it. It's behind us now. We'll move on. I think for Brandon, sure, he was glad to hear it."
