Giants concerned for ex-mate Vogelsong

SAN FRANCISCO -- When the Giants made their 2014 World Championship run, they forged a bond under the slogan "#StrongerTogether."
Even though pitcher Ryan Vogelsong is no longer on the team, that mentality is not forgotten for Giants manager Bruce Bochy, who sent Vogelsong a text message in the aftermath of a scary hit-by-pitch on Monday that resulted in multiple facial fractures for the former Giants hurler.
"We're all concerned about him," Bochy said. "We think the world of Vogey."
Vogelsong, now with the Pirates, was carted off the field at PNC Park in the second inning of Pittsburgh's 6-3 victory over Colorado on Monday after he couldn't get out of the way of an errant Jordan Lyles fastball and was struck around his left eye.
"He just never saw the ball, I could tell," Bochy said. "He never had a chance, and it got him pretty good, unfortunately."
Bochy has not yet had a chance to catch up with Vogelsong, who was scheduled for surgery on Tuesday.
Vogelsong, who spent five seasons with the Giants from '11-15, was a key part of both the '12 and '14 championship rosters. San Francisco went 7-0 with Vogelsong on the mound in the postseason during those two title pushes. He was also named to his only All-Star Game in '11.
The 38-year-old was 1-1 with a 3.74 ERA with Pittsburgh before the injury. The Pirates have not yet set a timetable for his return.
