Injured Romo to resume throwing Friday

April 26th, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants right-hander Sergio Romo will begin testing his injured elbow Friday when he starts throwing on flat ground, manager Bruce Bochy said Monday.
The Giants knew when a strained flexor tendon sidelined Romo on April 11 that he would need more than the minimum 15-day recovery period to regain his pitching form. Romo recorded a 2.70 ERA in four appearances before he was injured.
Bochy added that right-hander George Kontos, who sustained the same injury that shelved Romo, also will need to stay on the DL past his earliest possible activation date, which is May 4. Kontos, who began throwing Sunday, initially expressed hope of returning to the bullpen as soon as he was eligible or shortly afterward. Kontos had a 1.59 ERA in eight outings before going to the DL.
