NEW YORK -- Howie Kendrick could be on the 10-day disabled list a little longer than expected.
He is scheduled to have a MRI exam on his strained left hamstring Monday in Philadelphia. The Phillies placed him on the DL on Friday (retroactive to Wednesday). He had not played in the field since June 21, but appeared twice as a pinch-hitter and once as a designated hitter in Seattle.
If Kendrick's hamstring needs more time to heal, it will be interesting to see how it affects his value as the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline approaches. Kendrick is hitting .349 with eight doubles, one triple, two home runs, 14 RBIs and an .879 OPS in 139 plate appearances.
"If I wanted a professional hitter, I sure wouldn't have any pause," Phillies president Andy MacPhail said, when asked if he would have any concerns about acquiring Kendrick.
Here are updates on three other Phillies on the DL:
• Right-hander Vince Velasquez made a rehab start Saturday with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He allowed one hit, one run and one walk in two innings. He threw 33 pitches (17 strikes). He figures to make two more rehab starts before rejoining the Phillies' rotation sometime after the All-Star break.
• Right-hander Jerad Eickhoff is scheduled to make a rehab start Tuesday. He could rejoin the rotation after that.
• Second baseman Cesar Hernandez is recovering well from a strained left oblique. He is about three weeks into a recovery estimated to take six weeks.
