Hoffman, Shipley among top prospect perfomers Sunday

Rockies, D-backs hurlers both don't allow a run in pitchers' duel

May 2nd, 2016

Top 100 pitchers Jeff Hoffman (No. 49) and Braden Shipley (No. 64) squared off Sunday in the final game of the four-game set between Triple-A Albuquerque and Reno, and both hurlers were electric.
Hoffman, No. 5 on the Rockies' Top 30, turned in his best start of the season for the Isotopes, firing seven scoreless innings, during which he allowed just three hits (all singles). The right-hander matched his season high with six strikeouts and did not issue a walk in the outing, his first walk-less performance of 2016, with 68 of his 99 pitches going for strikes.

The 23-year-old righty, acquired from Toronto in the Troy Tulowitzki blockbuster last July, has pitched brilliantly in his first taste of the Triple-A level, going 2-0 in five starts with a 1.52 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 25/9 K/BB ratio in 29 2/3 innings.
Shipley, meanwhile, managed to keep the opposing team off the board for a second straight start, tossing six scoreless innings of four-hit ball with five strikeouts and two walks. Since giving up six earned runs in his outing on April 21, the D-backs' No. 1 prospect has rattled off 13 consecutive scoreless frames across his past two starts, with just seven hits allowed and 13 strikeouts in that span. On the season, the 24-year-old is 2-1 with a 3.26 ERA and 20/6 K/BB ratio in 30 1/3 innings (five starts).

Though both Hoffman and Shipley were at their best, neither right-hander was able to pick up a win in Sunday's game, which ultimately was won by Reno on Peter O'Brien's (D-backs' No. 10) walk-off home run in the bottom of the 12th inning. The long ball was O'Brien's eighth of the season and moved him into a tie for the Minor League lead.
The rest of the best performances from top prospects Sunday
No. 8 overall prospect Tyler Glasnow (Pirates' No. 1) issued a season-high five walks over five innings but was still plenty dominant as he allowed two hits in his second straight scoreless start for Triple-A Indianapolis. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out seven in the win and now has 37 strikeouts in 26 innings (12.8 K/9) this season, while opposing hitters are batting .187 with just 17 hits against him in that span.

No. 34 overall prospect Raul A. Mondesi (Royals' No. 1) and Bubba Starling (Royals' No. 7) provided the offense in Double-A Northwest Arkansas' win against Tulsa as they combined to go 6-for-8 with three extra-base hits and four runs scored. Mondesi hit a double, scored twice, plated a pair and swiped his 10th bag of the season as part of a 3-for-4 effort, while Starling, who also finished 3-for-4 with a double, connected on his fourth home run of the season. On the mound, lefty Matt Strahm (No. 10) recorded a season-high eight strikeouts and allowed one earned run in five innings for the Naturals.

No. 63 overall prospect Cody Reed (Reds' No. 3) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning en route to throwing seven innings of one-hit ball as Triple-A Louisville shut out Norfolk, 3-0. The 23-year-old southpaw, whom the Reds acquired from Kansas City in the Johnny Cueto deal last July, has been sharp so far this season -- his first at the Triple-A level -- for the Bats, posting a 1.62 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 17/5 K/BB ratio in 16 2/3 innings (three starts).
No. 70 overall prospect Luis Ortiz (Rangers' No. 5) tossed a season-high six scoreless innings for Class A Advanced High Desert in a win against Rancho Cucamonga. The 20-year-old right-hander scattered four hits and fanned six in his fourth start (fifth appearance) of the year for the Mavericks, giving him 22 strikeouts and a 3.15 ERA in 20 innings on the season.
Phillies No. 20 prospect Rhys Hoskins hit a solo home run, his fifth, to extend his hitting streak to 18 games, though it didn't keep Double-A Reading from falling to Portland in 10 innings, 8-7. After a breakout 2015 campaign, Hoskins, a 2014 fifth-rounder, has continued to make strides this season at Reading, batting .256/.330/.488 with 17 RBIs in 21 games.
• In his third scoreless start of 2016, Angels No. 14 prospect Jaime Barria yielded one hit in five scoreless innings, striking out five, to lead Class A Burlington past Fort Wayne. After giving up four earned runs in three innings during a shaky season debut, the 19-year-old righty has surrendered just two earned runs in 20 innings over his last four starts.
Giants No. 18 prospectJarrett Parker had a monster day at the plate for Triple-A Sacramento, going 3-for-4 with three home runs, six RBIs and four runs scored in a win against Salt Lake. The three-homer performance was the second of his professional career, as he also accomplished the feat in the big leagues with the Giants last September. While Parker had a game to remember Sunday, the 27-year-old outfielder is batting just .203 in 20 games this season.

• Scouts questioned whether Mariners No. 4 prospect Tyler O'Neill's aggressive approach and power frequency would translate in Double-A as it did in previous years. The 20-year-old slugger hasn't had any problems so far, though, as he connected on his sixth home run on Sunday to power Jackson past Mobile, 6-4. More significant is that O'Neill is also batting .313/.383/.578 and showing better plate discipline, with an encouraging 10/29 BB/K ratio and career-best 10.6 percent walk rate in 22 games for the Generals.
