Alfaro, Hoskins among top prospect performers Friday

Phillies' Nos. 4, 13 use offensive outburst to help Reading avoid elimination

and Rhys Hoskins powered Double-A Reading to a 13-6 win over Trenton on Friday night to stave off elimination from the Eastern League semifinals.
Alfaro, the Phillies' No. 4 prospect and No. 62 on the Top 100, paced the Fightin Phils' offense with a pair of home runs and three RBIs. It was his third four-hit game of the season and first with multiple home runs.

The 23-year-old catcher hit both of his homers off of Yankees' No. 7 prospect (No. 85 overall), connecting on solo shots in the first and fifth innings, and he also plated a run with a seventh-inning single. With the 4-for-5 performance, Alfaro is now 6-for-13 with five RBIs in the series, which Trenton leads, 2-1.
As for Hoskins, the Phillies' No. 13 prospect padded Reading's lead with a two-run home run in the fifth inning, his second hit and first homer of the series. The 23-year-old first baseman finished the regular season with the second-most home runs (38) and RBIs (116) in the Minor Leagues, trailing only teammate Dylan Cozens (Phillies' No. 7), who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI on Friday.

No. 44 overall prospect Kevin Newman went 3-for-5 with a triple, a double and two RBIs, but it wasn't enough to keep Double-A Altoona from falling to Akron in Game 3 of the Eastern League semifinals, 9-4. The Pirates' No. 5 prospect is batting .538 (7-for-13) with four extra-base hits in the series, which Akron currently leads, 2-1. Newman, 23, batted .320/.389/.426 during the regular season, amassing more walks (43) than strikeouts (36) in 102 games.
No. 65 overall prospect Kolby Allard (Braves' No. 4) tossed six scoreless frames but received a no-decision, as Class A Charleston rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Rome, 4-3, in Game 2 of the South Atlantic League semifinals. The 19-year-old lefty scattered three hits, walked two and fanned one en route to throwing 97 pitches (68 strikes). Allard has now completed at least six innings in eight of his last 10 starts.

No. 80 overall prospect' (Rays' No. 3) two-run home run in the third inning helped Double-A Montgomery edge Jackson, 4-3, and claim its first win of the Southern League semifinals. The 20-year-old outfielder hit a career-high 14 homers while batting .274/.370/.420 in 135 games for the Biscuits during the regular season.

No. 53 overall prospect Kyle Tucker (Astros' No. 2) and Jason Martin (Astros' No. 29) combined for three home runs and nine RBIs as Class A Lancaster blew out Rancho Cucamonga, 21-6, to move on to the California League Division Finals. Martin, one of three Minor Leaguers to hit at least 20 home runs with 20 stolen bases in 2016, paced the JetHawks' offense by going 3-for-5 with two home runs and a career-high seven RBIs, while Tucker finished 2-for-5 at the plate, hitting a two-run home run as well as a double.
's three-run home run proved the difference as Triple-A Nashville defeated Oklahoma City, 6-5, to take a 2-1 series lead in the Pacific Coast League semifinals. The home run was the A's No. 5 prospect's second in three games and gives him eight RBIs in the series.

Royals No. 8 prospect Ryan O'Hearn was 3-for-5 with two home runs and a double on Thursday when Game 2 of Double-A Northwest Arkansas' series against Springfield was suspended during the seventh inning. He added a double after the game resumed Friday to finish the game 4-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Meanwhile, after hitting a pair of home runs in the series' opener, second baseman Corey Toups (Royals' No. 30) went deep once again in Game 2 and then made it four in three games with a solo shot in Game 3, which the Naturals won, 8-3.

Pirates No. 12 prospect Yeudy Garcia hurled seven strong innings to lead Class A Advanced Bradenton past Tampa and into the Florida State League finals. The 23-year-old right-hander, who posted a 2.76 ERA with 127 strikeouts in 127 1/3 innings during the regular season, allowed one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts.
"His mindset going into the game was really good. Before, there were some starts where he would just maybe try to coast through the first inning. Today, he was absolutely ready from pitch No. 1 and the Game 1 start, I think, gave him some adrenaline," Bradenton manager Michael Ryan told MiLB.com.
Reds No. 13 prospect T.J. Friedl went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and scored three runs out of the leadoff spot to pace Rookie-level Billings in a 7-3 victory over Great Falls. Pacing the Mustangs on the mound was right-hander Ian Kahaloa (Reds' No. 24), who set career highs with 10 strikeouts and seven innings pitched in what was arguably the best start of his young career. The 18-year-old righty yielded four hits and one walk while throwing 62 of his 93 pitches for strikes in the outing.
Braves No. 16 prospect fired seven scoreless innings to pace Triple-A Gwinnett in an 11-1 win over Columbus. The 23-year-old right-hander scattered three hits and struck out eight, with 66 of his 102 pitches going for strikes. The win gave Gwinnett a 2-1 series lead in the Governors' Cup semifinals.

• A big offensive performance by Mike Papi has Double-A Akron one win away from advancing to the Eastern League finals. The Indians' No. 26 prospect went 3-for-5 with five RBIs in the contest, three of which came on his lead-extending home run in the top of eighth. It was the 23-year-old's sixth home run in his past 10 games dating back to the regular season.
