TORONTO -- John Gibbons provided updates on a trio of injured Blue Jays before Tuesday evening's series opener against the D-backs.
The manager started by updating the status of righter fielder Jose Bautista, who left Thursday's contest against the Phillies after crashing into the right-field wall during the seventh inning.
Bautista was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Friday, and he saw a specialist in Charlotte, N.C., on Monday.
"Turf toe," Gibbons said about the diagnosis. "He has to wear a boot for a couple of weeks and then see where he's at. This guy has treated a lot of guys with very similar injuries, and they all vary on how quick they come back. But he wasn't too alarmed."
Toronto plans to continue starting Ezequiel Carrera in right field during Bautista's absence. Carrera has put together a career-best season to date, slashing .313/.382/.444 with three home runs in 47 games.
Gibbons also updated the status of injured southpaw relievers Brett Cecil and Franklin Morales, noting the duo will begin rehab assignments tonight with Class A Dunedin.
Cecil has been on the 15-day DL since May 15 with a torn lat and was 0-5 with a 5.23 ERA prior to going down. The 29-year-old is expected to be an integral part of the Blue Jays' bullpen down the stretch.
Morales has been on the 60-day DL with left shoulder fatigue suffered in early April. The 30-year-old has made two scoreless appearances with the Blue Jays this season.
Chad Girodo is currently the lone left-hander in Toronto's bullpen and has allowed five earned runs in 10 1/3 innings.
All the way up
Tuesday's lineup featured a new touch at the top of the order for the Blue Jays, as Gibbons placed Devon Travis in the No. 2 slot in front of Josh Donaldson and Edwin Encarnacion. Travis came off the disabled list on May 25 after offseason shoulder surgery and worked his way back into form at the bottom of the order. The 25-year-old enters Tuesday's action with a season-high seven-game hitting streak, during which he's hitting .481 (13-for-27).
"He's really swinging it well," Gibbons said. "Carrera's doing well in the leadoff spot, so we'll put Travis up there and see how it all plays out."
Rotation set for the weekend
Following their second off-day of the week on Thursday, the Blue Jays will start Aaron Sanchez on Friday, R.A. Dickey on Saturday and Marcus Stroman on Sunday against the White Sox. While there was a belief the Blue Jays might alter the order to protect Sanchez's innings, Gibbons believes the two days off will help their young right-hander, who started on Friday against the Orioles.
"He'll have, like, a week off," Gibbons said. "You want to protect the kid and those kind of things, but you also want him out there as much as possible with the way he's been throwing."
Field of dreams
Tuesday afternoon in Peterborough, Ontario, the Jays Care Foundation -- in conjunction with the City of Peterborough, Trent University and the Peterborough Baseball Association -- unveiled the Trent Sports Fields, a new baseball facility for children in the local community. The project was the recipient of a $100,000 Field of Dreams investment from Jays Care, the charitable arm of the Blue Jays, which was used to provide lighting for the fields.
"We had a grant application over from a baseball organization in Peterborough, and they had trouble supplying enough fields for all the kids that wanted to play," said Robert Witchel, the executive director of Jays Care. "Using sport to get the kids engaged and teach them life skills has always been a large part of our strategy, and this will certainly help."
