KANSAS CITY -- Royals right-hander Dillon Gee has been shut down for the season after being diagnosed with blood clots after Sunday's game in Detroit.
"After the game in Detroit, we're packing up and getting ready to go on the plane and Dillon Gee began suffering from shortness of breath, which concerned the trainers," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "They took him to the hospital, and it was determined he had developed blood clots.
"[The] trainers did a good job of recognizing it and taking full precaution that there was no danger to him. Luckily they found what they found."
A clot was discovered in one of Gee's lungs, and another was found in his right shoulder. Gee remained in Detroit for further evaluation and treatment, and he was expected to return to Kansas City sometime Tuesday night.
Gee also was diagnosed with a blood clot in his right shoulder in 2012 when he was with the Mets. That clot was removed with a catheter, and he was placed on the disabled list.
The Royals did not know how Gee was being treated for his present blood clots.
Gee pitched in relief on Sunday in the Royals' 12-9 win.
"He didn't really feel the symptoms when he was pitching or when he came out of the game," Yost said. "But afterward he had a hard time catching his breath."
Yost also indicated that outfielder Lorenzo Cain, who has been dealing with a Grade 2 sprain of his left hand, officially is shut down for the season. Cain has played only once this month, on Sept. 9.
"Doesn't make any sense now to push that," Yost said.
