NEW YORK -- Finally.
Orioles starter Kevin Gausman picked up his first win in 14 road starts this season on Sunday and he did it in impressive fashion. The righty hurled a badly needed seven scoreless innings to lead the O's to a sweep-avoiding 5-0 victory over the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
"That's about as good as I've seen him," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of Gausman, who picked up his first road victory as a starter since August 17, 2014.
"He had really good command of his fastball and both offspeed pitches. [Catcher Matt Wieters] did a great job with kind of rocking the boat back-and-forth and not letting them sit on anything."
The Orioles' rotation, which had covered just 5 1/3 combined innings in the two games prior, had made it necessary for the club to make a move a day to help preserve the bullpen, and the O's added two more relievers on Sunday. Gausman ensured no one would get overextended, holding New York to just seven hits and striking out nine.
"I'm just happy we got a win. Obviously the first two games didn't go the way we wanted. My goal was just to go deep in the game, whether I got beat up or not," said Gausman, who improved to 6-10 with a 3.73 ERA this season. "I wanted to go seven and give those guys a break a little."
With Opening Day starter Chris Tillman currently on the disabled list, Gausman has come up big. He's gone six or more innings in five of six starts and has become someone Baltimore can rely on to give the team some quality innings.
As for getting the road monkey off his back, Gausman smiled.
"I'm sure somebody will [still ask]," he said. "I'm pretty relieved about it. It's been kind of annoying to hear. But I know it's kind of what you guys [in the media] have to do. I'm just happy we got a win as a team. I pitched well enough to get multiple wins on the road this year, had some tough no-decisions. Today, it just went my way."
