CHICAGO -- Kris Bryant can hear the fans when they chant, "M-V-P! M-V-P!" but he tries not to pay attention. The Cubs' third baseman says winning the National League Most Valuable Player Award is not one of his goals.
Plus, his parents may have a tough time finding a spot for the trophy.
"It's pretty cool," Bryant said of the fans' support. "I don't put too much thought into it. It's hard to tune that out. They were very loud [Wednesday] night. It's really cool to hear that from the fans."
Fans cheer on Bryant's teammate, Anthony Rizzo, with "M-V-P" chants as well.
"It's very deserving for him, too," Bryant said.
Rizzo has joked that he'd wear the NL MVP Award if he won it. Bryant is just the opposite. He's already won the Golden Spikes Award as the top college player in 2013, then won multiple awards as the nation's top Minor League player, and followed that with the National League Rookie of the Year Award last year.
Where does he keep all the hardware? Some of it is on display near the batting cages where his father, Mike, works with young hitters.
"I tell him, 'Don't put all the good stuff out there,'" Bryant said.
The other trophies are now in Bryant's bedroom at his parents' house in Las Vegas.
"That's how I feel -- it's just a piece of hardware," Bryant said. "For me, it's more about the memories that go along with it. This season [with the Cubs], we're doing really well and everybody on the team is doing really well. This will be one of the seasons I'll remember for a long time."
On Friday, the 40,818 at Wrigley Field started chanting when Bryant snared Brandon Crawford's line drive to open the fifth inning. Although Bryant went 0-for-3, ending his hitting streak at 14 games, he did draw a walk, and he has reached base in a career-high 19 games. He leads the Major Leagues in runs scored, and he began Friday tied with the Rockies' Nolan Arenado for most home runs in the NL (36).
Bryant's favorite trophy so far? The Golden Spikes Award. Even though Mike wants everyone to see it, Kris says no.
"He just wants to show it off -- he's a proud dad, and I understand that," Bryant said.
