Rocker, Leiter set to up the ante this weekend

March 12th, 2021

One after another, a pair of this year's most highly regarded Draft prospects are stepping onto the big stage this weekend. The timing is no coincidence, as the two in question are rotation-mates for powerhouse Vanderbilt.

Commodores right-handers Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter have pitched up to the hype so far, but neither has been tested against elite competition this college season. That changes on Friday and Saturday, when Vanderbilt -- ranked No. 2 in Division I baseball -- visits No. 13 Oklahoma State.

Rocker is slated to get the ball for his first Friday night start of the year, which will be aired on ESPN+. The No. 1 prospect on MLB Pipeline's Draft Top 100 has allowed one run -- unearned -- over 15 innings this season, piling up 25 strikeouts and walking seven in that span to go 3-0 over three starts. No stranger to bright lights, as a freshman Rocker struck out 19 in a no-hitter against Duke in the NCAA Division I Super Regionals in 2019.

Still, the spotlight will be even more intense as SEC play and the Draft draw closer during his junior year. Over 20 total games -- 17 starts -- for Vanderbilt, Rocker is 17-6 with a 2.71 ERA, 167 strikeouts and 36 walks across 129 2/3 innings. He operates with a fastball that has been clocked at 99 mph and a slider that may be an even better weapon than the heater.

Leiter, MLB Pipeline's No. 6 Draft prospect and son of Al Leiter, has basically kept in stride with Rocker so far this season, going 3-0 in three starts while allowing two runs -- one earned -- over 15 innings. He has 26 strikeouts and has also walked seven.

The New Jersey native, who was a high school teammate of Yankees prospect Anthony Volpe, turned down a 20th-round selection by the Yankees in the 2019 Draft to become a Commodore. Featuring a 12-to-6 curveball and a low- to mid-90s fastball, Leiter is 5-0 with a 1.17 ERA and 48 strikeouts over 30 2/3 collegiate innings.
