PHOENIX -- Rockies left-handed pitcher Kyle Freeland checked out fine Tuesday after being hit on his throwing shoulder and jaw by a J.D. Martinez line drive during Monday night's 5-4 victory over the D-backs.
The bruise to the shoulder is more a concern than the jaw, but on Tuesday Freeland played catch at 90-100 feet with no problems. In a normal between-starts progression, he would throw a bullpen session on Wednesday and work toward his next turn -- Saturday at home against the Padres.
Manager Bud Black watched the throwing session and said "there were no repercussions … very encouraging." Black has not announced when Freeland's next start will be.
Freeland (11-10, 4.03 ERA in 28 games, 27 starts) left the game, which was tied at 1, after the incident occurred leading off the fourth inning. Freeland sported a circular, red bruise on the shoulder that he said felt worse than it looked. His jaw was sore and he bit the left side of his tongue on impact, but other than that, he was OK.
"When I was watching TV last night, a more clear picture than on our computers, and when the ball clipped my jaw you could actually see the ripple go through and to the other side of my face," Freeland said. "MLB Network slow-mo'd it, and it was a clear picture."
Lefty Tyler Anderson replaced Freeland and earned the win with four scoreless innings.
