SAN FRANCISCO -- Madison Bumgarner found his form after giving up four second-inning runs, and Brandon Crawford's three-run homer and Matt Duffy's fifth-inning triple keyed a 6-4 Giants victory at AT&T Park on Friday night.
Crawford's fourth homer of the season in the bottom of the second killed the Rockies' momentum after a big inning. Duffy tripled in a run in the fifth and scored on Hunter Pence's two-out single to give the Giants the lead. Meanwhile, Bumgarner didn't let a Rockies runner past first base the rest of his outing. He finished with 10 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings, as his work helped settle the Giants after two straight losses.

"That was the critical at-bat of the game," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Crawford. "That put us right back in it and lifted the club. It changed the momentum of the game."

The Crawford homer was the sixth of the season off Rockies starter Chad Bettis. Going into Friday, the Major League leaders had given up eight. Bettis yielded five runs and eight hits in six innings.
"That's unacceptable," Bettis said. "Having a four-run lead in the second inning against Bumgarner, you can't just throw it away like that."
The Rockies fell to 5-3 with two more games vs. the Giants left on their current road trip.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Duffy seeing triple: Duffy hit third in the batting order for the 10th time this season and delivered just his second RBI from that spot, despite his .333 average. The fifth-inning triple drove in the tying run.

"Yesterday was pretty disappointing, especially when it happens in your division," Duffy said. "You have to find a way to come back. After that inning we did some decent things and today Crawford got the momentum back."
Dazzling D: The bottom of the first featured two must-see defensive plays -- second baseman DJ LeMahieu's backhand grab and rollover to retire Joe Panik and Gerardo Parra's leaping catch near the wall in center to rob Duffy of at least a double.

LeMahieu said a defense has to be ready for acrobatics against Giants hitters.
"They spray the ball so well, I never know where to play them," LeMahieu said. "You're always on your toes, but I feel I'm even more on my toes because I never know where they're going to hit it. I don't think we have any extreme shifts on any of those guys."

Gearrin's big strike: Reliever Cory Gearrin struck out Mark Reynolds, who already had three hits on the night, with two runners on and one out in the eighth, preserving the lead.
"He's done a great job for us," Bochy said. "Watching him in Spring Training, I knew he'd be on this ballclub. He's key to the bullpen."

Piecing it together: The Rockies used a combination of steady second-inning hitting -- including a Nolan Arenado double and singles from Reynolds (8-for-15 in four games against the Giants this season) and Ryan Raburn -- and small ball to take a 4-0 lead. One run scored on second baseman Joe Panik's throwing error, and the Rockies added a Dustin Garneau sacrifice fly and Bettis' RBI squeeze bunt for runs. The inning drove up Bumgarner's pitch count to 42. But by the next inning, Bumgarner had flipped on the switch.

"We gave ourselves a chance, that's the biggest thing," Raburn said. "We came up short. You're going to have those days, but our team keeps battling. That's the biggest part about this team."

Rockies: Righty Jon Gray, who has taken some lumps but also set career highs in strikeouts in two of his three starts this season, will start Saturday against the Giants at 2:05 p.m. MT. He fanned 11 in six innings against the Padres in his last start, a 2-1 loss that was typical of his short career. The team has scored three or fewer runs in 11 of his 12 outings.
Giants:Johnny Cueto takes the mound for the Giants on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. PT. The right-hander is 4-2 with a 2.84 ERA in eight starts against the Rockies.
