SEATTLE -- Wade Miley was bragging about his camouflage blazer and cowboy hat.
Adam Lind was decked out in a University of Indiana Hoosiers basketball game jersey and vertical red-and-white-striped warmup pants like he was about to join the layup line at Assembly Hall.
A look into the locker of Steve Johnson revealed astonishingly loud University of Maryland-themed pants and a bright red Terrapin-inspired sport coat.
And, naturally, the various wardrobe items of a Mariners team that is set to embark on its first themed-attire road trip of the season wouldn't be complete without something from the skipper. As Wisconsin-bred manager Scott Servais spoke to reporters before Tuesday afternoon's getaway game against the San Diego Padres, one could clearly see the Green Bay Packers "cheesehead" next to one of his carry-on bags.
The rule for the flight to San Diego for a short two-game set against the Padres beginning Wednesday night was simple, according to Servais.
"We talk a lot about how we've got guys from six different countries, we're very diverse, so let's have some fun with it," Servais said. "You have to wear a jacket, but somewhere, some accessory or something has to say something about where you're from or where you grew up."
The players got at least one week of notice, and they searched the far reaches of the Internet for whatever they could find. Nathan Karns, a Texas native, said he would properly "cowboy up" for the trip. Robinson Cano said he had a T-shirt displaying the flag of his native country, the Dominican Republic.
And Servais said he would sport a green jacket, a yellow dress shirt and a Lombardi tie. And he knew of no Federal Aviation Association by-law or statute preventing him from having that cheesehead on when he ambled down the jetway.
"It's not hazardous material," he said.
Marte ready for rehab
Shortstop Ketel Marte, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since May 22 because of a sprained left thumb sustained while sliding into second base on May 21 in Cincinnati, was slated to make his first rehab appearance for Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday night against Salt Lake at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.

Servais said Marte would log designated-hitter duties on Tuesday and "then we'll work him into defense" in subsequent games. Servais estimated that Marte, who is eligible to return from the DL on June 6, would play "four or five" games with the Rainiers. That stretch of games will include a road trip to Las Vegas on Saturday, so Marte will make the trip with Tacoma because Servais doesn't want Marte to get two days off before the Mariners return home on June 6 to play Cleveland.
"Fingers crossed, he becomes active when we get off the trip on Monday," Servais said. "That's the plan."
Zych making progress
Reliever Tony Zych, who's been out since May 3 (retroactive to May 2) because of rotator cuff tendinitis in his right shoulder, has been progressing in long toss and could be back on a mound by the time the Mariners return to Seattle on June 6.
"I think once he gets a couple [bullpen sessions] underneath him, then we can look at rehab and go from there," Servais said. "He's definitely moving in the right direction. He's starting to be less concerned, which is good."
