MIAMI -- The youthful energy continues to give the Marlins emotional lifts, but some inexperience in the field in the 10th inning ended up proving costly in Saturday's 10-6 loss to the Cubs at Marlins Park.
For the second straight night, the Marlins and Cubs pushed themselves into extra innings. On Friday night, it was the Marlins celebrating a 2-1 win in 17 innings, but on Saturday it was Chicago's turn to tap hands after coming off the field from a three-hour, 57-minute contest.
In the 10th inning, the Marlins made a miscue on a rundown that enabled Addison Russell to scramble safely into third base. Benjamin Zobrist's RBI single had already given the Cubs a 7-6 lead, but with the inning extended, Kristopher Bryant delivered a three-run double, breaking the game open off closer Brad Ziegler, who was working his second inning and third in two nights.
"After last night, we needed to find a way to piece through, because who knows how long tonight it was going to go," Ziegler said. "That [10th] inning had three little tappers in front of the plate. I felt like, other than the pitch to Zobrist and the last one that Bryant hit, I made a bunch of pretty good pitches in the inning. It just didn't go our way."
The Marlins have dropped two of three to the Cubs, but they got the Chicago starter out of the game in fewer than five innings in both losses. On Opening Day, Jonathan Lester worked 3 1/3 innings, and on Saturday, Yu Darvish was lifted after 4 1/3 in his Cubs debut. Derek Dietrich had a two-run homer for Miami before Darvish even recorded an out.

"I'm extremely happy, obviously not with the result, but with the process our guys are going through and the concentration, the focus to bounce back," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "We were ready to play tonight, obviously they were, too. We jump out quickly. They get back in it. It was a good game."
Odrisamer Despaigne gave the Marlins a much needed five innings. It was a busy 24 hours for the right-hander, because he worked the 17th inning and was credited with the win on Friday. He started Saturday and gave up five runs (four earned) while striking out six.
"I always try to stay prepared," Despaigne said. "My arm feels good. Just go with what the game gives you, and go out there tomorrow and pitch if needed."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Keeping the line moving: The Cubs broke through with a crucial two-out hit in the fifth. Jason Heyward singled with one out and one out later, Ian Happ and Bryant drew walks. Rizzo then delivered a two-run single off Despaigne, with a third run scoring on the play when right fielder Cameron Maybin bobbled the ball for an error.
"I felt the Happ walk hurt us right there. It gets us to Bryant, it gets us to Rizzo," Mattingly said. "If we can get [Happ] there, his pitch count is way down. [Despaigne] would have went back out there in a heartbeat."

Russell's hustle: Russell's ability to escape a rundown in the 10th turned out to be a big play because it extended the inning for Bryant to collect his three-run, two-out triple. Russell was caught too far off of third when Marlins catcher John Holaday fielded Albert Almora Jr.'s swinging bunt in from the plate. Holaday ran Russell back toward third, but waited too long to make the throw, as Russell used a headfirst dive to beat the tag by Brian Anderson. The Marlins challenged that Anderson had tagged Russell's leg before he got back to the base, but the call would stand after a brief review.
"I think you probably have got to get rid of it quicker, just seeing it from the naked eye," Mattingly said of Holaday. "Get rid of it quicker. But it's happening fast. We didn't end up scoring anyway. It didn't matter anyway, but that's what kind of opened that inning up."

Dietrich was hit by a pitch in the third inning, his third plunking of the season. It was also the 74th time he's been hit by a pitch in his career, the most in Marlins history.
MITEL REPLAY OF THE DAY
After losing a challenge when Russell escaped a pickle earlier in the inning, the Marlins issued another challenge in the 10th after Cubs rookie Victor Caratini was ruled safe at home on Bryant's double. That call would also stand.

Cubs:Jose Quintana makes his season debut on Sunday when the Cubs close this four-game series. This will be the left-hander's first career start against the Marlins. This spring, Quintana struck out 13 and gave up three earned runs over 18 1/3 innings in five starts. First pitch will be 12:10 p.m. CT.
Marlins: In Sunday's series finale at 1:10 p.m. ET, left-hander Dillon Peters will face the Cubs at Marlins Park. Miami's No. 15 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, opens the season in the rotation because Dan Straily (right forearm strain) is on the disabled list. Peters made six starts as a September callup in 2017, going 1-2 with a 5.17 ERA in 31 1/3 innings.
