Acosta to join Rays camp as non-roster invitee

Catcher will step in as No. 8 prospect O'Conner recovers from back injury

February 18th, 2016

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Rays have added catcher Mayo Acosta to their Spring Training numbers as a non-roster invitee.
Justin O'Conner has a back problem, so Tampa Bay invited Acosta to help with the early-camp catching duties. Otherwise, Acosta would have arrived at camp when the club's Minor Leaguers report.
Acosta has spent the past two seasons at Triple-A Durham. Last season, he played in 16 games for the Bulls, hitting .083 with three RBIs.
O'Conner is ranked by MLB.com as the Rays' No. 8 prospect. He spent 2015 at Double-A Montgomery. Tampa Bay president of baseball operations Matt Silverman told reporters on Thursday that O'Conner has been slowed by the injury.
