deGrom skips session due to minor thigh injury

February 22nd, 2016

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- A minor leg injury has the Mets proceeding cautiously with one of their top starting pitchers. Jacob deGrom skipped a scheduled bullpen session Monday due to a bout of soreness in his inner left thigh, but neither he nor the team expressed any concern over the issue.
Though deGrom is not completely sure when he injured his leg, he recalls slipping during running drills over the weekend.

"I don't know if it was that specifically or if it was something else," said deGrom, who went 14-8 with a 2.54 ERA last season. "It was just a little sore. I went in there and got it iced. We decided it was best just to take it easy today and get back out there tomorrow."

In lieu of his bullpen session, deGrom threw long toss Monday morning and felt "completely fine." He expects to return to a mound as soon as Tuesday, though manager Terry Collins indicated it could be later in the week.
"I said, 'Listen, let's not get cute here,'" Collins said. "So we'll give him a couple of days."
Worth noting
• Right-hander Zack Wheeler plans to throw off a mound on Saturday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last March. The Mets are targeting a July 1 return for Wheeler.
