Mets sign All-Star infielder Jed Lowrie

The New York Mets announced today that the club has signed All-Star infielder Jed Lowrie to a two-year contract.  
 
Lowrie, 34, had career highs in homers (23), RBI (99) and walks (78) and was named to the American League All-Star team with Oakland last year. He led AL second basemen with a .993 fielding percentage in 2018.
 
"Jed is veteran, versatile player that makes us better on the field, in the batter's box and in the clubhouse," Mets General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen said. "As an accomplished switch-hitter, Jed also provides balance and length to our lineup."
 
Lowrie, who is the fifth All-Star the Mets have added this off-season to their major league roster, had a .353 OBP and a .801 OPS last year. He finished eighth in the AL in RBI and walks and ninth with a .324 (47-145) batting average with runners in scoring position.
 
Over the last two years, the 6-0, 180-pounder is tied for fourth in the majors with 86 doubles and seventh with a 1.54 strikeout-to-walk rate (min. 1,300 PA). Among second basemen with 1,000 PA since 2017, Lowrie is second in OPS (.798), third in OBP (.354), third in walks (133), fourth in RBI (146) and seventh in runs scored (150).
 
Among switch-hitters, he is tied for third in extra-base hits (127) and third in OPS (.804) over the last two years (min. 1,300 PA). He ranks 14th among all infielders in WAR (8.5) since 2017 according to Fangraph and is one of five infielders with a 4.0 WAR and a 153 games in each of the last two seasons (Francisco Lindor, Nolan Arenado, Alex Bregman and Paul Goldschmidt) according to Baseball-Reference.
 
Lowrie had 49 doubles, ranking second in the majors, a .808 OPS and a career-high 86 runs scored while slashing .277/.360/.448 in 2017 for the Athletics. He ranked second among major league second basemen with a .991 fielding percentage in 2017.
 
During his 11-year major league career, Lowrie has slashed .262/.335/.414 with 521 runs scored, 259 doubles, 17 triples, 104 home runs, 509 RBI and 438 walks in 1,109 games with the Red Sox, Astros and Athletics.
 
He has logged more than 4,000 defensive innings at shortstop, more than 3,000 innings at second base and over 1,000 innings at third base.
