Yanks swap Cortes to Mariners for int'l money

November 25th, 2019

NEW YORK -- The Yankees traded left-hander Nestor Cortes Jr. to the Mariners on Monday in exchange for international signing bonus pool money.

Cortes, who turns 25 on Dec. 10, was 5-1 with a 5.67 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 33 appearances over eight stints with the Yankees this past season.

Showcasing an array of pitching deliveries, Cortes frequently served as the club’s "bulk" reliever. One of his outings was a five-inning appearance on June 15 against the White Sox in which the Hialeah, Fla., product recorded his first Major League victory.

He was designated for assignment earlier this week as the Yankees cleared space on their 40-man roster to protect several prospects in advance of December’s Rule 5 Draft.

The Yanks’ 2019-20 pool total increased to $5,835,800 with the trade, according to The Associated Press. The Yankees have used $5,762,000 of that, including $5.1 million on Dominican outfielder Jasson Dominguez, $377,500 on Dominican third baseman Enger Castellano and $187,500 on Venezuelan catcher Manuel Palencia.
