Rangers outfielder had 9 RBIs, including 6 in Friday's game

April 10th, 2017

Rangers outfielder is the first American League Player of the Week for the 2017 season.
Mazara ended the first week of the season the Major League leader in RBIs, with nine. His 10 hits ranked tied for second in the AL and his .417 batting average tied for third in the league. Mazara also ranked fourth in the AL in OPS (1.212) and total bases (18), and he tied for fourth in runs (six) and slugging percentage (.750).
It's been a strong follow-up to a breakout rookie season for the 21-year-old, who finished fifth in voting for the AL Rookie of the Year Award last year.
Mazara opened his season with four straight multihit games, drove in a career-high six runs on Friday against the A's and hit a pair of home runs during the week, including his first career grand slam.
The only other player in Rangers franchise history with 10 hits and nine RBIs in the team's first six games of a season was Juan Gonzalez, who did it at the start of the 1998 season. He went on to win the AL Most Valuable Player Award that year.
