SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Rangers right fielder Nomar Mazara, who went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer on Wednesday, had two more hits Thursday in the Rangers' 10-0 Cactus League victory over the Royals at Surprise Stadium.
Texas left-hander Derek Holland made his first spring start and threw shutout ball for 1 2/3 innings. He gave up three hits, walked one and struck out one -- 37 pitches, 20 strikes.
Royals right-hander Edinson Volquez worked 1 2/3 innings before reaching and surpassing his 30-pitch count (34/21).
Volquez, pitching for the first time since his heroic effort in Game 5 of the World Series, gave up two hits, two walks and one run while striking out two.
"Eddie was good,'' manager Ned Yost said of Volquez. "Lost ball in the sun or Eddie would have got through two innings clean. I thought he threw the ball good."
Left-hander Brian Flynn, trying to grab a Royals' bullpen spot, threw a scoreless inning. Rookie Bubba Starling made his second superb defensive play in two days, throwing out a runner at home plate.
"Defensively, we got a lot of confidence in that defense,'' Yost said. "Very athletic, strong arm. He can play defense."
Mitch Moreland and Joey Gallo each drove in a run for the Rangers, while Ryan Rua drove in two runs.
Royals up next: The Royals will travel to Peoria on Friday to take on the Padres in an 8:10 p.m. CT start. Right-hander Yordano Ventura will make his first start of the spring. The game can be seen on MLB.TV and MLB Network and heard on the Royals Radio Network.
Rangers up next: Ian Desmond will make his first start in left field when the Rangers host the Dodgers at 2:05 p.m. CT Friday at Surprise Stadium. Desmond was a shortstop with the Nationals for the past seven years and was signed by the Rangers to play left field. He joined the Rangers on Monday. Adrian Beltre is scheduled to make his first start of the spring at third base with Chi Chi Gonzalez on the mound. The game can heard on an exclusive webcast at Rangers.com.
