Thompson was out of options and the Dodgers expected him to be claimed when he failed to make their 25-man Opening Day roster and he was designated for assignment.

Thompson, 27, was acquired by the Dodgers from the White Sox in a three-team trade Dec. 16, 2015 and showed promise as a right-handed hitter, but suffered two fractured vertebrae in his back during the 2016 season and never regained form.
