BALTIMORE -- When the Pirates' Andrew McCutchen slid into third base on the front end of a double steal, Orioles fans likely grimaced when they saw the center fielder's foot make contact with Manny Machado's left hand.
Machado turned away from the play and fell to the ground, and the training staff immediately came out to check on him. The play occured in the second inning of Wednesday's 9-6 extra-innings walk-off win at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Machado remained in the game, so all appeared well until he came out after the third.
After the game, manager Buck Showalter summarized the situation.
"[It's] on top of his left hand," Showalter said. "Obviously, a spike with a slide. He had an X-ray, which was negative. They're talking about getting an MRI tomorrow just to be on the safe side, make sure we know what we're dealing with. So we'll see if and when that can get set up. But I'm hoping it's something that's [not bad]."
Showalter said the hand became sore and did not feel good when Machado tried to hit, so the Orioles decided to be cautious and have him leave the game.
According to Showalter, the problem is that the punctured wound was pretty deep, but the team did not feel it was able to be stitched. Machado's situation remains unclear.
The Orioles have already dealt with issues stemming from injuries on slides this season. Things escalated when Machado slid into Dustin Pedroia of the Red Sox, who were upset with the play, in April. What that turned into was not going to happen this time around.

Showalter made that very clear.
"It's an unfortunate slide, I can tell you that," Showalter said. "We've had our share. I don't think Andrew was doing it maliciously; it certainly was an unfortunate execution of a slide. You hate to see it. I'm sure McCutchen felt the same way. But sometimes things happen in the heat of battle, just like Manny's slide. I don't think there's any maliciousness on either part. We were certainly not going to start retaliating."
