SARASOTA, Fla. -- Catcher Matt Wieters, who started Thursday against the Pirates as the designated hitter, was expected to continue expanding his throwing program to 120 feet as he recovers from a right elbow injury.
"If he comes through that we will get an idea when we might go there [behind the plate]," manager Buck Showalter said. "You won't see him in an A game until we know for sure he's going to break with us."
Should Wieters not be ready by Opening Day, the O's would be able to backdate his disabled list stint to March 25, which is why he'll switch to playing in Minor League games.
Orioles relievers Chaz Roe and Brian Matusz were not in camp on Thursday. Matusz, who has been dealing with a lower back injury, was sick with the stomach flu while Roe joined his wife for the birth of their second child.
Showalter wasn't sure when Roe would return to the team, but the bullpen hopeful will probably get "another three outings at least" before camp ends.
Both Pedro Alvarez and Hyun Soo Kim played in a Minor League game on Thursday to get some extra at-bats as Showalter wanted to get specific players in Thursday's regular lineup.
The Orioles could make their next round of roster cuts as early as Friday.
