O's to pay Minor Leaguers, staff through June

May 28th, 2020

The Orioles on Thursday became the latest in a line of Major League teams to commit to paying their Minor League prospects through at least the end of next month, a source told MLB.com. The Orioles will continue to pay weekly stipends of $400 to their Minor Leaguers through June 30, while the fate of a Minor League season remains undetermined due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The club is also committed to paying the entirety of its baseball operations staff through at least the middle of June, according to several sources, for now avoiding reductions and furloughs some other clubs have had to endure due to the pandemic. MLB and the Players Association are currently attempting to negotiate a structure for a truncated season. MLB cancelled the remainder of Spring Training and delayed the start of the regular season on March 12 due to COVID-19.

Though several teams with operations in Florida have opened their facilities for voluntary workouts recently with the state lifting stay-at-home orders, the Orioles have not and do not currently have immediate plans to do so. While the city of Baltimore remains under stay-at-home orders, another team source said it would not open its Sarasota or Twin Lakes facilities until it “feels 100 percent confident that all the proper health and safety protocols for the protection of players and staff are in place.”

Former highly rated prospect Jomar Reyes was among 37 Minor Leaguers (most from the system’s lower rungs) the Orioles released last week, a team source confirmed. The O’s paid Reyes, 23, $350,000 to sign out of the Dominican Republic in 2014, a relatively large investment for the club in the international market at the time. But Reyes stalled in his development while spending much of the past three seasons at Class A Advanced Frederick.

Other notable names among those cut were the sons of two former big leaguers, Dalton Hoiles (son of Chris Hoiles) and Preston Palmeiro (son of Rafael Palmeiro), and Severn, Md., product Sean Miller. The Athletic first reported the transactions, which were confirmed by a team source.
