Spoiler alert: Friars snap D-backs' streak at 13

September 9th, 2017

PHOENIX -- The D-backs' franchise-record, 13-game winning streak came to a screeching halt on Friday night as the Padres hung on for a 10-6 victory at Chase Field. The D-backs hadn't lost a game since Aug. 23 against the Mets in New York.
Arizona holds a six-game lead over Colorado for the National League's first Wild Card spot and is nine games ahead of Milwaukee and St. Louis.
"I'm definitely disappointed letting this streak end on my start day," D-backs starter said. "Something that you never want to do when you have a streak going [is] to be that starter to end it."
San Diego, winning for only the second time in seven games at Chase Field this season, had an 8-0 lead, pelting Corbin for six runs in the fourth inning and another pair in the fifth before the left-hander was taken out.
Historic run gives D-backs confidence

The D-backs came back with two runs in the fifth on a Rey Fuentes two-run, pinch-hit homer and four more in the sixth as they sent 10 men to the plate and notched five extra-base hits, including a two-run homer by J.D. Martinez. The bases were loaded when popped out to center and struck out to end the threat.

"Shoot they played hard tonight," Padres manager Andy Green said about Arizona, for whom he was previously the third-base coach. "Most teams, when they go down 8-0, most teams roll over and die. That team doesn't. You really have to beat them and they made us do that."
Right-hander , making only his second start for the Padres, earned his first victory of the season, pitching into the sixth inning. He added a two-run, bases-loaded single off Corbin in the fourth to start the scoring.

Lyles making most of second chance
Padres center fielder was a homer shy of the cycle, knocking in four runs with a two-run single, a two-run triple and a double.
"He had great at-bats all day," Green said.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Big six-run fourth for Pads: The Padres sent nine men to the plate against Corbin and had five hits, including Margot's two-run triple. The D-backs hadn't been behind by more than a run for 109 consecutive innings. Their streak of 97 without being behind ended when the Dodgers went up 1-0 in the first inning against them Wednesday night.

Add on runs: After the D-backs rallied to 8-6 in the sixth, the Padres loaded the bases in the seventh. With two out, Margot faced right-hander , Arizona's fourth reliever of the game. Hoover had Margot on an 0-2 count, but elevated a fastball that Margot lined to center for two more important Padres runs in the game.
"That was the biggest hit of the night," Green said. "It gave us the two insurance runs that put us up, 10-6. With no balls and two strikes, they had just brought Hoover in, those kind of hits are game-changing,"
"That big two-out base hit by Margot was a big difference-maker," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "It took the momentum right away from us."
