After 37 games, the Padres have already had 36 players on their 25-man roster.
The list includes 18 position players and 18 pitchers. Right-handed reliever Luis Perdomo will become the ninth pitcher to start a game for the Padres Saturday night when he makes a spot start against the Brewers in Milwaukee.
The Padres' record for players used in a season is 59 in both the 2002 and 2008 seasons. The most pitchers ever employed by the Padres in a season was 37, which is also the National League record.
By the way, the Padres record for fewest players used in a season is 31. That record was set during the 1984 run to the franchise's first National League championship. The franchise record for fewest pitchers used in a season was 12 in 1973.
The Padres currently have eight players on the 15-day disabled list -- right-handed starting pitchers Tyson Ross and Andrew Cashner; left-handed reliever Matt Thornton; right-handed reliever Jon Edwards, and infielders Alexi Amarista, Yangervis Solarte, Cory Spangenberg and Jemile Weeks. They also have two pitchers -- left-handers Robbie Erlin and Buddy Bauman -- on the 60-day disabled list.
Notes from the scorebook
• Brandon Morrow's return from shoulder surgery last August has been detoured to extended Spring Training "to work on some things." Morrow, 31, has made two starts at three different levels of the Padres' system this season while working on a Miinor League contract. He was 0-1 with a 6.94 earned run average in 11 2/3 innings with Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore, 1-1 with a 7.84 ERA in 10 1/3 innings at Double-A San Antonio and 0-0 with a 7.20 ERA in 10 innings at Triple-A El Paso.
• Two key Padres hitters are in major slumps. First baseman Wil Myers is 5-for-39 since May 4 with one homer, one RBI and three runs scored. His batting average has tumbled from .315 to .265. And after a fast start, right fielder Matt Kemp is experiencing another tough May. Kemp is now 3-for-35 since opening May by going 6-for-15 start with a double and a homer with three RBIs in the first four games of the month. Kemp's average has fallen from .301 to .246.
• In the last nine games against the Mets, Cubs and Brewers, center fielder Jon Jay is hitting .333 (11-for-33) with four doubles, a homer, five RBIs and five runs scored to raise his batting average from .261 to .281.
• Since returning from Triple-A El Paso and playing only second base, Jose Pirela has gone 4-for-19.
