SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced plans surrounding Hispanic Heritage Weekend beginning Friday, September 23 and running through Sunday, September 25. For the first time ever, the Padres will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, and the independence of various Latin American countries, over the course of three days with each game featuring a different experience.
The festivities begin on Friday, September 23 with Fiesta in the Park presented by Verizon prior to the Padres vs. Giants game that night. Fans will be able to enjoy food and drink specials at the Park at the Park with a DJ playing a variety of Spanish music. During the night's pregame ceremonies, the Padres will honor the Tijuana Toros of the Mexican Baseball League for their success during the 2016 Mexican League season, which saw them claim the Zona del Norte Championship.
The celebration continues on Saturday, September 24 with Hispanic Heritage Night supported by T-Mobile. Fans will be treated to a variety of dance performances as they enter the gates that night with groups including folklorico, flamenco and mariachi performing inside certain Petco Park entrances and at the Park at the Park. Countries celebrating their independence during Hispanic Heritage Month will be honored during the pregame ceremony, with representatives from each country, including consulate members, delegates and community leaders, on hand to present their respective countries' flag.
Fans are encouraged to stick around after Saturday night's game to enjoy a Hispanic Heritage-themed fireworks show set to the music of popular Spanish musical artists.
Hispanic Heritage Weekend wraps up on Sunday, September 25 with the season's third and final Domingos Padres presented by T-Mobile. The Park at the Park will feature a number of Hispanic-themed art displays from organizations from both San Diego and Tijuana, B.C. Performing on the Park at the Park stage will be several different dance groups spanning a range of Latin-themed dances including bachata, salsa, mariachi and others with DJ La Mafia playing music between each performance. Park at the Park will also feature pregame food and drink specials.
Sunday also marks Baja Little League Day at Petco Park, as hundreds of little leaguers from Baja will partake in a pregame parade around the warning track and participate in Q&A session with a Padres player after Sunday's game. As part the pregame ceremony, the team from Liga Municipal in Tijuana that won the Colt League World Series, will be honored prior to the game.
