The brief comeback will be at a time Martinez's age (45) matches his uniform number.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner remains a fixture around the Red Sox, working as a special assistant and making community appearances throughout the year. Fans also get to hear him regularly as an analyst on TBS' baseball broadcasts.
But the chance to see Martinez take the mound in the 24th annual Oldtime Baseball Game at St. Peter's Field will be a unique treat, and it comes on a night the Red Sox are off. Admission is free.
Proceeds to this year's game will benefit the John Martin Fund and ALS Therapy Development Institute. Martin was a longtime camera man for NESN who was diagnosed with ALS last winter.
Martinez will pitch against some of the top amateur players throughout the Boston area.
You will see Martinez wearing a flannel uniform as all players do in the Oldtime Baseball game. In fact, the uniforms will be from virtually every era in baseball history.
The game will have a homey feel to it, as fans are asked to bring a beach blanket or chair and sit out along the foul lines.
