The Phillies finished last in baseball this season with 610 runs, 39 fewer than the 29th-ranked Braves. The Phillies also ranked 29th in on-base percentage (.301) and 29th in slugging percentage (.385).
Though Henderson could only work with the talent he had on the field, it is routine for teams to bring in new coaches to offer a different voice for players.
"I look at the team statistics," Mackanin said last week in Atlanta. "When you're 13th, 14th and 15th in 10 of those categories, that tells you all you need to know. We're down at the bottom in hitting. As far as a yardstick to measure, I look at those stats. Numbers matter. They tell you the story."
