BOSTON -- Before the Phillies' game against the Red Sox on Tuesday night, manager Pete Mackanin announced that second baseman Cesar Hernandez would be sidelined for "roughly six weeks" with a strained oblique he suffered Friday on a throw.
Hernandez played in 58 games at second and was hitting .277/.336/.399 with 17 extra-base hits.
Veteran Howie Kendrick (10th round, 2002 Draft, St. Johns River CC), who has made three errors over the past two games filing in at the position, will continue to be the stop gap option for Mackanin, though the skipper expects to discuss the position with team vice president and general manager Matt Klentak when the team returns home after Tuesday's game.
"He's made a few miscues, but he's played a great majority of his games at second base," Mackanin said of Kendrick. "So, I think once the rust wears off, he's going to be fine over there."
Over 12 seasons, Kendrick has played 1,114 games at second base.
