Pipeline preview: Oakland's Puk seeks first pro win

August 2nd, 2016

Here's a look at top prospects to watch Wednesday in Minor League action:
Mejia streak watch: Indians No. 4 prospect Francisco Mejia aims to extend his 44-game hit streak as Lynchburg hosts Potomac at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Hitter to watch: Mickey Moniak (Phillies' No. 2), GCL Phillies vs. GCL Braves (12 p.m. ET)
The No. 1 pick in the 2016 Draft has done nothing but hit since making his professional debut. Moniak, the No. 32 overall prospect, went 2-for-5 with a double and a triple on Tuesday and has a hit in 13 of his past 14 games. The 18-year-old outfielder is hitting .326 and has collected 22 RBIs in 25 games.

Pitcher to watch: A.J. Puk (Athletics' No. 2), Class A Short-Season Vermont vs. Lowell (7:05 p.m. ET)
The 21-year-old left-hander is set to make his fifth professional start. Puk has struck out eight and given up four earned runs over the first 8 1/3 innings of his pro career. The No. 78 overall prospect has seen his pitch count increase in each outing and will look to take another step forward vs. Lowell.

Duel of the Day: (Giants' No. 7) vs. Kyle Freeland (Rockies' No. 8), Sacramento at Albuquerque (9:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Gregorio is hoping August will be the month when he turns things around. The Giants No. 7 prospect has seen his ERA rise every month this season, culminating in a 6.08 ERA in five July starts. The right-hander did throw seven innings of one-run ball on July 22, but then gave up three runs in five innings in his final July start. Over his past two starts, Gregorio has struck out 19 and walked none.
Freeland has also been tallying up the strikeouts lately, totaling 14 over his past 12 innings. The left-hander has given up two earned runs in each of his past two starts and is 2-2 since his promotion to Triple-A.
