Cervelli exits with left thumb discomfort

September 5th, 2016

PITTSBURGH -- Pirates catcher left Monday's 12-6 loss to the Cardinals at PNC Park after four innings due to left thumb discomfort.
Cervelli struck out in the fourth inning and did not return in the fifth, replaced behind the plate by backup . He appeared to be uncomfortable after that at-bat. He missed time earlier this season due to a fractured hamate bone in his left hand. Cervelli has said his hand will not return to full strength until next year, after he gets a chance to rest and recuperate in the offseason.
Cervelli left the Pirates' clubhouse without speaking to reporters following the game. His left thumb was lightly wrapped.
