PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates announced additions to their scouting staff on Monday, hiring Andrew Lorraine and Gary Varsho as professional scouts.
Varsho was the Pirates' bench coach under manager John Russell from 2008-10. He was dismissed, along with former pitching coach Joe Kerrigan, in August 2010 by Russell and general manager Neal Huntington. They were replaced by Jeff Banister, now manager of the Rangers, and Ray Searage, widely regarded as one of baseball's best pitching coaches.
Varsho has been a pro scout for the Angels since 2012. He played for the Bucs in 1991-92 and '94.
Lorraine spent the past seven years as a pitching coach in the Mariners' farm system, most recently working with their Double-A Jackson affiliate this past season.
Lorraine pitched in parts of seven Major League seasons for the Angels, White Sox, A's, Mariners, Cubs, Indians and Brewers from 1994-2002. He was drafted out of Stanford University in 1993 after attending William S. Hart High School, the alma mater of Pirates pitcher and broadcaster Bob Walk.
