PITTSBURGH -- Pirates left fielder Starling Marte was not in Wednesday's starting lineup, though he did line out to left as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning of a 6-5 10-inning loss to the Mets. He was removed in the seventh of the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Mets due to a left ankle contusion.
"We're going to attempt to get him available for some type of game activity later today," head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk had said before Wednesday's game.
According to Tomczyk, the team would evaluate Marte's ankle during workouts and see how he responded to potential game activity, such as pinch-hitting. Then, they would determine how quickly he could sneak back in the lineup.
"Knowing Starling, he wants to be out there," Tomczyk said. "so he's going to do everything he can to try and help the team win."
Right-hander Arquimedes Caminero, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left quadricep strain after hitting two batsmen in the head against the D-backs in May, continues his rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis.
Caminero threw one inning of relief last Friday, allowing four runs on one hit while walking three. On Monday, he pitched two innings, giving up three hits and striking out four.
According to Tomczyk, Caminero continues to rehab in Indianapolis and there are no issues with his left quad at this time.
Catcher Elias Diaz underwent right elbow surgery in early right May and has begun the rehab process.
"He continues to work through throwing on flat ground," Tomczyk said. "He continues to work through your normal post-surgical aches and pains, and he's also swinging the bat."
• The Pirates officially recalled right-hander Jameson Taillon from Triple-A Indianapolis. Taillon was scheduled to make his Major League debut against Noah Syndergaard and the Mets in Wednesday's series finale.
In corresponding moves, Pittsburgh optioned right-handers Curtis Partch and Wilfredo Boscan to Indianapolis. Boscan was recalled as the Pirates' 26th man for Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets.
• After two outings for both Neftali Feliz and Mark Melancon in Tuesday's doubleheader, manager Clint Hurdle said neither would be available in the bullpen on Wednesday. Feliz recorded back-to-back holds and Melancon notched consecutives saves.
