CHICAGO -- Right-handed reliever Zack Burdi will have Tommy John surgery at some point this week, according to White Sox general manager Rick Hahn.
The White Sox No. 11 prospect per MLBPipeline.com was diagnosed with a UCL tear, as announced by Hahn the first day after the All-Star break, but he was going to get a second opinion before surgery.
The 22-year-old Burdi posted a 4.05 ERA with 51 strikeouts over 33 1/3 innings for Triple-A Charlotte this season after being selected 26th overall in the 2016 MLB Draft.
Quintana visits old friends
Jose Quintana, who picked up his second victory in as many starts for the Cubs on Sunday night, made his way to the White Sox side of the field before Monday's contest at Wrigley Field. He exchanged pleasantries with former teammates and coaches, although White Sox manager Rick Renteria didn't have a chance to talk to him.
"I spoke to him the day he was moved, and we had a long conversation over the phone," Renteria said. "Obviously it wasn't in person, and I shared what I thought. I think he's in a good place."
Renteria watched a little bit of Quintana's effort against the Cardinals after the White Sox landed from Kansas City.
"He's going to be a good piece for the Cubs," Renteria said of the White Sox All-Star, who was traded before the start of the season's second half for four prospects, including outfielder Eloy Jimenez (No. 8 overall) and pitcher Dylan Cease (No. 62).
