Delgado has battled a variety of injuries since Spring Training and has not pitched since injuring his elbow midway through last season.

Souza, meanwhile, has appeared in just 14 games this season after straining his right pectoral muscle during Spring Training.

Throwing was the final challenge for Souza, who started his rehab assignment as strictly a designated hitter. He played right field Monday and Tuesday before getting a scheduled off-day Wednesday.

"Souza had another great night [Tuesday] and everything is trending toward a return here," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said.

Souza went 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs Tuesday night and since joining Reno is 7-for-16 with three homers.

Staying focused

As the trade rumors surrounding Orioles shortstop Manny Machado and the D-backs continue, Arizona's current shortstop, Nick Ahmed, is keeping his focus on the field.

According to MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi, trade conversations about Machado between Arizona and Baltimore have been "consistent." The D-backs and Indians might be the most motivated suitors in Machado talks, MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal notes.

"I don't read any of it or watch any of it, but you have family members and friends who like to talk about it," said Ahmed, an elite defender with a slash line of .223/.282/.412. "It's not in any way, shape or form in my control, so I try not to give any mental space or energy to it. When the thoughts come up I just try to give them to God."
