ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have reorganized their front office with several significant staff promotions, including three new assistant general managers, three special assistants/scouts and somebody to serve as quality control over their pitching development.
In all, the Rangers promoted seven from within the organization on Monday. The moves came after assistant general manager Thad Levine left the organization to become general manager of the Twins.
"We looked at candidates both inside and outside the organization," general manager Jon Daniels said. "There were some good people outside the organization, and it was tempting to bring somebody in from the outside. But in this particular case, it was illuminating how good our people are.
"But it's not about promoting our guys. It's about promoting the best guys in the game, which we feel those guys are."
The three new assistant general managers are:
• Josh Boyd, overseeing professional scouting, research and development and Pacific Rim operations. Boyd was the Rangers' pro scouting director but takes on more responsibility in the other two areas.
• Mike Daly, overseeing Major League operations and international scouting. Daly was the farm director the past three seasons but was head of international scouting in 2010-13 when the Rangers signed Nomar Mazara and Rougned Odor, among others.
• Jayce Tingler, overseeing player development. Tingler takes over the traditional duties of farm director. Tingler has spent the past 10 seasons working in the Rangers' organization, including the past two as the Major League field coordinator on manager Jeff Banister's staff. Prior to that, he spent time in the Rangers' system as a coach, coordinator and manager.
"All three will have input and help in all areas of operations," Daniels said. "These will be their areas of specialization where they take responsibility."
Tingler will be replaced on the Major League staff by Josh Bonifay, who has spent the past six seasons in the Astros' farm system, including the past four as a manager. He is the son of former Pirates general manager Cam Bonifay.
The Rangers also promoted professional scouts Mike Anderson and Scot Engler to the role of special assistant to the general manager. Curtis Jung, who had been managing the Pacific Rim operations, will now become a special assignment scout.
Todd Walther, who had been a pro scout for the past seven years, has been promoted to director of pitching research and development. His change is part of the Rangers' renewed emphasis on developing their own pitching.
Two members of the front office didn't get new titles but will continue to oversee two important areas. Kip Fagg remains the director of amateur scouting, and Matt Vinnola, as director of baseball operations, will continue to handle most of the contract negotiations for arbitration-eligible and younger players.
"I think our front office has been energized as we go through the offseason," Daniels said. "We're excited about putting together our team on the field, and we have a good team internally to do that."
