Rays content with moves, but might do more

TB has acquired Duda, Jennings, Romo, Cishek ahead of Deadline

July 30th, 2017

NEW YORK -- With the non-waiver Trade Deadline just a day away, the Rays have already done most of their buying, adding first baseman and relievers Dan Jennings, and .

Owner Stuart Sternberg and manager Kevin Cash both said the Rays could still be in store to bring in more pieces if the opportunities present themselves, but they are comfortable with the group of players they have right now.

"If you told me we were starting the year with this club, right now," Sternberg said, "I would put us as the favorite in the division."

Sternberg said he feels most comfortable with the state of the Rays' bullpen, given their three additional back-end relievers, in Jennings, Romo and Cishek, and was most concerned with their offense, though the addition of Duda helps.

Duda homered in each of his first two games with the Rays since being acquired Thursday night. Romo surrendered a go-ahead, two-run homer to the Yankees' in the sixth inning of Saturday's game, and Jennings hasn't been sharp in his first two Rays outings.

The Rays' front office will be on the phone up until Monday's 4 p.m. ET Deadline to see if they can make another move, but Sternberg said they aren't in a situation where they'd make a move "out of necessity, but out of desire."

"I wouldn't be disappointed if this is how it ended," Sternberg said. "But I would be pleased if we were able to do some more."

Kiermaier scratched from rehab game

Outfielder was scratched from his Minor League rehabilitation assignment with Class A Advanced Charlotte on Saturday due to back tightness, though Cash said it was "not too severe."

"We've got an opportunity to draw his rehab out a little bit, make sure he's ready," Cash said. "Nothing that we wanted to push right now, but he's fine."

Kiermaier was transferred to the 60-day DL on June 28 for a hairline fracture in his right hip, which he injured on June 8. He was sent on his rehab assignment on Thursday.
