ARLINGTON -- Starter Matt Andriese went on the 10-day disabled list with a groin strain on Wednesday, highlighting a series of roster moves by the Rays prior to their final game of a three-game series against the Rangers.
Right-hander Chih-Wei Hu was optioned to Triple-A Durham, and right-hander Hunter Wood, who made his Major League debut in Tuesday night's 9-5 loss to the Rangers, was optioned to Double-A Montgomery.
The Rays recalled right-handers Austin Pruitt and Ryan Garton, and outfielder Mallex Smith.
"Our front office is trying to do everything it can to try and make sure that we have some coverage to get through these games, and help us win these games," manager Kevin Cash said.
Andriese felt pain in his right groin during his start Tuesday. He left the game with two outs in the bottom of the second inning.
Andriese's injury is not thought to be serious. With the Rays having off-days on Thursday and Monday, Andriese would not have made his next start until Tuesday.
"I think [the reason is] the fact that it's going to be seven days between my starts," Andriese said. "So, why not the three extra days? Roster moves give us some help in the bullpen."
Andriese said he had not tested the injury Wednesday, so he could not give a good answer when asked if he felt worse.
"Just got some treatment on it," Andriese said. "Letting it heal. With the off-day tomorrow, we're just going to let it calm down, and see how it feels the next few days."
Andriese is 5-1 with a 3.45 ERA over 11 starts.

Smith smiled when asked about the revolving-door atmosphere at Durham, in light of the many roster moves of late.
"We've been seeing guys coming in and out," Smith said. "So, at this point, all you're doing is staying ready, and just being ready for your opportunity when it comes."
Outfielder Peter Bourjos went on the 10-day DL on Tuesday with tennis elbow, paving the way for Smith to be recalled for his second stint with the Rays.
Smith hit .273 (6-for-22) with three stolen bases in eight games in his first stint in the Majors. At Durham, he was hitting .306 with five doubles, two triples and three home runs in 24 games.
"Mallex makes sense, to give us some more outfield coverage," Cash said. "A bat and a baserunner, for sure."

Pruitt begins his second stint with the Rays. He went 3-1 with a 7.52 ERA in 12 games (one start) earlier this season. He has a 1.04 ERA over five games at Durham.
"We sent him down a couple of weeks back to kind of re-freshen him up," Cash said. "He's done a nice job. The reports on him are really, really good, and he looks a lot more like the guy we saw during Spring Training."
Garton begins his third stint with the team. He was last optioned to Durham on Monday, but was able to return because of Andriese's injury.
