Bourjos to DL; Rays recall pair of pitchers

May 30th, 2017

ARLINGTON -- The Rays recalled right-hander from Double-A Montgomery and right-hander from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday. As announced after Monday's game, was optioned back to Durham, and outfielder was placed on the disabled list with "tennis elbow," retroactive to May 29.
Bourjos noted that his elbow has "just been barking a little bit."
"Just a little sore," Bourjos said. "Nothing too bad. ... This is just kind of something that flared up. I've been playing through it. I think it's a good time to let it calm down for 10 days."
Manager Kevin Cash noted he did not think Bourjos would be out long. Thanks to having on his bench, Cash didn't sound worried about being a player short.
"But the nice thing about Michael Martinez is he's pretty versatile," Cash said. "He can play anywhere in the outfield, or in the infield. That's definitely a benefit. We didn't have that before him."
Wood is 3-3 with a 4.47 ERA in nine starts for Montgomery this season. The club's No. 26 prospect, per MLBPipeline.com, has never pitched in the Majors.
Cash noted that he saw Wood pitch in Spring Training, and that Wood was in position to give the bullpen length in Tuesday night's game, if needed.
"Given that it was his day to pitch [for Montgomery]," Cash said. "So, we expect him to be able to provide 90 to 100 pitches for us. A young pitcher that did some good things. Impressed us in Spring Training. He's got a good mix of pitches -- fastball, cutter, curveball that keeps hitters off balance."

Hu, the club's No. 8 prospect, is 1-0 with a 3.09 ERA in nine appearances (three starts) for Durham. He made two appearances for the Rays earlier this season, giving up one unearned run over 1 2/3 innings. Since returning to Durham, he has been pitching exclusively out of the bullpen.
"We know Chih-Wei enough," Cash said. "He's been in the bullpen in Durham, and responded pretty well."
Worth noting
• Cash told reporters that he mispoke on Monday when he said that Brad Miller (abdominal strain) would be playing for Class A Advanced Charlotte on Tuesday. He said he got mixed up, and that Miller will actually play for the Stone Crabs on Wednesday.
